I managed to snag the only copy of MPD Psycho at Comic Odyssey as it hid discreetly among the shelves. Perhaps that's the first thing I noticed--how small the first volume seemed, smaller and thinner than nearly any other manga title being published. It's quite neat however, and that includes the typography and the layout. Anyway, Dark Horse was hyping up this title and well, it kinda falls flat from different reasons. The art is gorgeous and the bizarre naked corpses would probably be shocking had I read it a decade ago before C.S.I. and its clones dominated prime time TV but I think the current generation has been desensitized to seeing corpses. Of course the corpses here are quite detailed and exquisitely drawn--more of the serious type rather than goofy-looking or approximations. Then there's our protagonist who suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder and you don't quite know what to do with him--do we cheer for him as a hero or fear him as the villain? Perhaps my biggest complaint is the pace of the story. While the stories are quite stand-alone, they're also not the most compelling. The first volume certainly leaves me interested in reading what's next but it's far from the "I can't wait for the next chapter!" mentality. Overall a good read, just ignore the hype surrounding it.
Rating: 3.5/5.

have you come across the pinoy reference in mpd psycho? i found it through scanlations, and it seems the original text was wonderfully grammatically correct, for the most part...
it's been a while since i last picked up the scanlations, but i recall that i didn't like the story itself all that much. i wonder about this "hype" you are referring to - i guess i missed the fan talk, after all?
Haven't spotted it yet unless it's not in the first issue.
Hype is usually in the US comic market.
The pinoy references start in volume 6. Here's a spoiler-free pic of one.
ikura = How much (cost)?
PESO da yo = kinda self explanatory
