Podcast Focus: Barbarian Needs Food

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://barbarianneedsfood.wordpress.com/
RSS Feed: http://www.fearthegooberzilla.com/barbarian/barbarian.xml
Description: I just discovered this podcast earlier this week as it's not part of any of the gaming networks (yay, there's several gaming networks!). For the most part, it's two guys chatting about a certain topic and in the case of the latest episode, D&D 2nd Edition. Their breakdown of the game was systematic and the dialogue was bearable (they certainly pass my geek credentials test). Certainly a podcast worth paying attention to... if they release episodes more regularly.

Podcast Focus: The Digital Front

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://thedigitalfront.com/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheDigitalFront
Description: I'm the type of guy who's interested in what happens behind the scenes in the RPG industry and perhaps that's why I enjoy Daniel Perez's The Digital Front. This gaming podcast occupies a very unique niche, in this case e-commerce and electronically distributed gaming material (such as PDFs). Admittedly, the one flaw of the show is that it's not frequent enough but thankfully, there's a new show this week. Probably not for the everyday geek but for those who want a more critical look at the industry...

Podcast Focus: Fast Forward

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.fast-forward.tv/
RSS Feed: http://fast-forward.tv/blog/wp-rss2.php
Description: Fast Forward is a monthly show that has been around for quite some time now but hasn't really garnered much attention. It's aired on various cable stations but you can download episodes of the show from the site. While Fast Forward is a originally a video interview and review show, audio-only segments are also available for download. From Peter S. Beagle to Gene Wolfe, this podcast has interviewed various authors and personalities involved in the science fiction/fantasy industry.

Podcast Focus: Narrative Control

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://narrativecontrol.com/
RSS Feed: http://narrativecontrol.libsyn.com/rss
Description: Narrative Control is one of the newer gaming podcasts that debuted a few months ago. The focus of this podcast is narrative-style gaming, paying attention to the story elements and role-playing aspects of a game. What I enjoy about the show is that it's relatively short, only thirty minutes long, yet making good use of that time.

Podcast Focus: SFFaudio Podcast

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.sffaudio.com/?cat=1559
RSS Feed: http://www.sffaudio.com/?feed=podcast
Description: Some quasi-self promotion here but if you want to hear two SF fans talk about the various podcasts and radio dramas that they listen to (and simply some geeky tomfoolery), you might want to check out the SFFaudio podcast. Best of all, it comes out consistently every Monday.

Podcast Focus: Bear Swarm!

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.bearswarm.com/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/BearSwarm
Description: Podcasts with more than three hosts is difficult to work with but The Bear Swarm! Podcast works for me. Several guys in a game store talk about the games they play (and occasionally plug the sponsored store which happens to give discounts to listeners) which covers everything from mainstream games like D&D to indie games like Dogs in the Vineyard. Sound quality is a notch down from excellent but still quite listenable.

Podcast Focus: The Dragon Page

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.dragonpage.com/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/tDp/C2C
Description: Every week, Dragon Page features an interview with an author or someone active in the industry. The show is just 30 minutes long and includes commentary before and after the show. They also have a "B Show" which covers book reviews and the like but it's not a regular thing. It's a decent podcast that gives authors a chance to plug their book and for the host to talk about how technology is making an impact in the publishing industry.

Podcast Focus: Animalcast

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://animalball.libsyn.com/
RSS Feed: http://animalball.libsyn.com/rss
Description: As far as RPG podcasts go, Animalcast is crass and rude and rough--and that's perfectly fine with me. The Animalball brothers utilize offensive humor and while that's not everyone's cup of tea, they're gamers at heart and not above insulting themselves for the sake of listeners. This is pretty much the equivalent of a mild Howard Stern for the RPG podcasting industry and if you can get into that tone and humor, you might want to check this podcast out.

Podcast Focus: Media Sound Off

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://mediasoundoff.com/
RSS Feed: http://mediasoundoff.com/podcast/feed
Description: Media Sound Off digs into the new media that the Internet spawned whether it's bloggers or podcasts or online videos. If you're interested in the production side of things, what makes this new technology different from the existing one, or simply want a behind-the-scenes discussion on such matters, you might want to check out this brand-new podcast.

Podcast Focus: The Voice of the Revolution

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://thevoiceoftherevolution.com/
RSS Feed: http://thevoiceoftherevolution.com/rss
Description: If it's just about indy RPG games, you don't need to look further than The Voice of the Revolution and the official podcast of Indie Press Revolution (IPR). It features interviews, discussion, and the latest news from IPR and I've certainly found it informative as well as broadening my horizons as far as tabletop gaming is concerned.

Podcast Focus: Science Fiction and Politics

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.courtneybrown.com/classes/podcasts.html
RSS Feed: http://www.courtneybrown.com/classes/scifi/mp3/CB_SciFiPoliticsClass1.xml
Description: This is actually an old podcast in the sense that it's done and there won't be new episodes. However, I'd like to give special attention to Science Fiction and Politics. Courtney Brown is a professor at Emory University and Politics is his specialty. One of his classes was entitled Science Fiction and Politics and he recorded his class as he talks about books like Foundation and Ender's Game and relate them as to how they're relevant not only in the modern world but taking its political context.

Podcast Focus: Virtual Play

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://virtualplay.podbus.com/
RSS Feed: http://virtualplay.podbus.com/?feed=rss2
Description: As far as tabletop RPG podcasts go, I've gone on record to say that I don't really listen to actual play recordings. Well, the past few months, that's not quite true. Aside from the Penny Arcade/PVP D&D recordings, the other actual play I actually listen to is Virtual Play. Mel White talks about his experiences with various games and plays excerpts of the relevant scenes to illustrate his point (entire games are also available in the archive). What you end up is a convenient and well-edited show. Their latest show features a D&D 4E variant where Skill Challanges rise to the forefront (instead of regular combat).

Podcast Focus: Hour of the Wolf

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.hourwolf.com
RSS Feed: N/A
Description: Jim Freund hosts a regular radio show three hours long (at the very least) that features various science fiction and fantasy authors, whether it's readings, radio plays, or interviews. This isn't strictly a podcast so there isn't much online buzz about this site. Because Hour of the Wolf is an actual radio show, which includes the music featured, the show isn't downloadable although you can listen to it via streaming.

Podcast Focus: What Are You Working On?

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://waywo.podbean.com/
RSS Feed: http://waywo.podbean.com/
Description: What Are You Working On? occupies this niche of RPGs and miniatures, especially the latter part where they talk about painting techniques or modifying existing miniatures to suit their specific RPG games. They also crossover into other tabletop games such as board games and CCGs but for the most part, it's an enjoyable level-headed banter as the hosts talk about their games and play experiences.

Podcast Focus: Writing Excuses

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.writingexcuses.com/
RSS Feed: http://www.writingexcuses.com/feed/
Description: Satisfying both my writer and geeky criteria, Writing Excuses are short podcasts (fifteen minutes long) which cover various aspects of writing as they interview people from all over the industry and share their own experiences. The podcast hosts include Brandon Sanderson (Wheel of Time alert!), Howard Taylor, and Dan Wells (how can you go wrong with such a well-rounded crew?).

Podcast Focus: Secret Identity

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://secretidentity.podomatic.com
RSS Feed: http://secretidentity.podomatic.com/rss2.xml
Description: A pair of guys give you commentaries on the latest comics, TV shows, cartoons, gaming, and everything else in between. Production-wise, the audio is superb and non-intrusive. The shows are quite long though are more than an hour but personally, once I hit the play button, I don't mind the length. In general a good podcast for all things geeky.

Podcast Focus: If You're Just Joining Us

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.ifyourejustjoiningus.com/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/IfYoureJustJoiningUs
Description: Jon Armstrong conducts short (and edited!) interviews with various people in the writing industry--and not just fiction. Recently, he had a round with various Campbell nominees. Personally, I find If You're Just Joining Us to be easy listening and the right length for those people with busy schedules.

Podcast Focus: Adventures in SciFi Publishing

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.adventuresinscifipublishing.com/
RSS Feed: http://www.adventuresinscifipublishing.com/feed/
Description: Interested in interviews with sci-fi/fantasy authors? Adventures in SciFi Publishing is one of the consistent podcasts out that deliver just that. Two regular fans, Shaun and Sam, are the hosts of the podcasts and make for geeky listening.

Podcast Focus: Wapcaplets

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://wapcaplets.podbean.com/
RSS Feed: http://wapcaplets.podbean.com/feed/
Description: Don't have time to listen to gaming podcasts? What's five to ten minutes of your time? Wapcaplets is quick and direct to the point as Chris Engler shares his opinions on the gaming industry.

Podcast Focus: Podictionary

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://podictionary.com/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/podictionary
Description: Charles Hodgson gives us a bite-sized etymology of a word daily. For example, in one of his latest entries, he talks about how the word "conniving" got its roots from "winking together". And even if you're not a big fan of podcasts, Hogdson posts the text of it anyway on his blog for you logophiles.
