30 Days of Night Contest

Apparently Ben Templesmith, the artist of the comic 30 Days of Night, will becoming here in December. Fully Booked and Inquirer are tying up to give away a free copy of the graphic novel (full details here and here). Meanwhile the Meet and Greet is on Oct. 30 while November 3 is the artist workshop and November 4 the Comicon Creation Conference and book signing.

The artist behind the successful horror series, Ben Templesmith, is coming to Manila! Ben’s artistic style brought a whole new dimension to modern horror and vampire looks in comics. Templesmith will be flying in from his hometown of Perth, Australia, to give a series of art workshops and book signings in schools and at Fully Booked this coming October.

NOW for the best news yet. Send your original vampire artwork to super@inquirer.com.ph with the subject “30 Days Vampire Art Contest” and the best one will win a free graphic novel of “30 Days of Night” from Fully Booked. The selected artwork will appear in the upcoming October issues of Super with proper cred of course!

Free George R. R. Martin Books!

Pat of Pat's Fantasy Hotlist is giving away an autographed set of Dreamsongs (a collection of short stories from George R. R. Martin).

The rules are the same as usual. First off, you need to send an email at reviews@(no-spam)gryphonwood.net with the header "DREAMSONGS." Remember to remove the "no spam" thingy.

Second, your email must contain your full mailing address (that's snail mail!), otherwise your message will be deleted.

Follow-Up to the 1st Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards

Budjette Tan has been investigating what ever happened to the winners of the 1st Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards and when the compilation of the winners' work will be compiled. Here's the response from Natalia Diaz, Marketing/PR Manager of Fully Booked:

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We are launching the compilation of the first book at the same time of the awarding ceremony, with Neil there, end November. Title is "Expeditions, " with a foreword by Neil and the cover by Leinil Yu. It is being printed as I type this.

Interestingly enough, isn't November when the Philippine Ad Congress will be? Hmmm...

Call for submissions to an anthology of Southeast Asian Literature

Another late-on-the-news announcement on my part but aspiring writers still have two weeks to crank out something:

Southeast Asia has been a region long divided not only by geographical and cultural boundaries but by the question of identity and belonging. One anthology will attempt to present the shades of contemporary Southeast Asian experiences of cultural/sexual identity, globalization, immigrant/expatriate experience, third culture phenomena, and new technologies, among others.

The call for submissions is open to Southeast Asian writers and translators under 40 years old. The anthology will focus on works dealing with contemporary themes, or employing new forms in poetry; prose (fiction, travelogues, essays, blogs, text, etc); drama (one-act plays, short screen/teleplays); graphic arts and comics (under 30 pages long); and everything in between—literary experiments as well as genre works (horror, sci-fi, fantasy, etc, or combinations thereof). Works must be limited to 8,000 words and must be in English (translations must be accompanied by the original text). Previously published works are also welcome.

Please send submissions to sealitbook@gmail.com, as attachments in MS Word document format. Deadline for manuscripts is September 15, 2007. Contributors will get multiple copies of the book.

NCCA Announces Acceptance of Entries to the 2007 NCCA Writers' Prize

From NCAA:

Executive Director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) announces the acceptance of entries to the 2007 NCCA Writers’ Prize.

The NCCA Writers’ Prize is a biennial grant awarded to six (6) writers, one for each of the following categories: novel, short stories (including children’s stories), poetry, drama, essay (English) and literary biography (English/Filipino). The grant, in the amount of TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND PESOS gross, will assist the grantee during the writing stage of the project. The grant is good for one year, after which a manuscript of the writing project will be submitted to the NCCA for possible publication or staging.

Entries shall be accepted starting June 1 to December 31, 2007.
