Book Review: The New World by Michael Stackpole

Every Monday, I'll be doing spoiler-free book reviews.

Retaining the suspense and excitement of the previous book, The New World brings to a close this epic fantasy series. Stackpole's characterization and sense of timing remains his strength as well as his ability to deliver to readers the unexpected. There are lots of action and combat scenes in this novel as well as the usual elements of epic fantasy including honor, betrayal, and a climatic battle. The New World kept me on the edge of my seat and Stackpole's use of language is quite compelling. Personally, I felt that the ending was a bit indulgent but not to the point that it ruins an otherwise kinetic trilogy. Honestly, I felt the second book in the series was superior but this was nonetheless a fun and enjoyable read. This could easily be the blockbuster action flick of the fantasy genre.

Rating: 3/5.

Rating System:

1 - There are better ways to spend your time.
2 - Ho hum books, usually typical of its genre. Probably only recommendable to die-hard fans.
3 - A cut above the rest, usually with one or more elements that sets it apart from the norm.
4 - Highly recommended and is easily a pioneer of the genre.
5 - A classic or it will be.
