Gaming Short Fiction

Gaming fiction is difficult to write, not simply because of the technical aspects of it, but because in many ways it has to reflect the game (whether it's the rules or the setting) and has to take it into consideration. For example, while I liked the original Dragonlance trilogies (Chronicles and Legends), a big problem was that the sequels was easily one Cataclysm after another. You can only blow up the world so many times. Another problem was that you couldn't also easily kill off villains because that left the gaming aspect without antagonists.

Anyway, what I was impressed with Legend of the Five Rings was the quality of its short fiction. It's definitely genre with that samurai and Oriental atmosphere yet in many ways, I find it to be good--and surprising--writing. And perhaps what's best is that it's short fiction and it's free!

Anyway, you can check out the archive of L5R short fiction at the bottom of Castle of Wind.
