tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903848080840259127.post5905871069753226788..comments2024-02-16T14:10:12.166+08:00Comments on Bibliophile Stalker: Bookstores or Libraries?Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger1125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903848080840259127.post-1467323163366918752007-07-16T11:13:00.000+08:002007-07-16T11:13:00.000+08:00i suppose it's because i built up my literary repe...i suppose it's because i built up my literary repertoire mostly through borrowing and lending (book rentals, public libraries and friends' houses were my homes away from home, growing up) that i'm really pushing for more and better libraries. sure it's the responsibility of every individual to attend to his or her intellectual growth, but it's also the responsibility of the government, especially the educational sector, to make more options available to people who may have limited access to certain materials.<BR/><BR/>but i don't doubt the importance of owning one's own books. as i've said elsewhere: it's depressing to be surrounded with books that aren't yours. i'm not even placing priority on the acquisition aspect, i.e. the emotional gratification one gets from owning a rare edition of such-and-such which was reproduced from the original moleskine draft written by so-and-so... but people do need to have their own libraries. especially if they are driven to specialize in certain disciplines, like law, architecture or sociology... or even fiction writing.<BR/><BR/>in order to get ahead in any discipline, you need to be able to find references on the fly. and i can safely say a lot of good reference books (esp. pinoy ones) are still unavailable online.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
