Podcast Focus: This Just In From GenCon

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://feeds.feedburner.com/ThisJustInFromGenCon
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/ThisJustInFromGenCon
Description: The biggest gaming convention, Gen Con, is upon us! However, if you can't go to the convention like me, you might want to check out This Just In From GenCon where veteran podcasters Paul Tevis and Ryan Macklin give us daily updates. Some people will live-blog, Twitter, and the like but that doesn't mean podcasting can't have its own equivalent.

Podcast Focus: Writing for Pay

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://writingforpay.org/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/writingforpay
Description: Not exactly the most frequent podcasts out there but Writing for Pay has a different criteria for writers it chooses to interview: writing that doesn't get you laid. So if you're interested in the "unglamorous" side of writing, do check out this podcast. It's short (under 30 minutes) and covers a wide variety of careers.

Podcast Focus: The Tome

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.thetomeshow.com/
RSS Feed: http://thetome.podbean.com/feed/
Description: In many ways, this is THE D&D podcast as The Tome has been one of the earliest podcasts (that's still around) that focuses on D&D specifically. Whether you're a 3.xx or 4E fan, you might want to check out The Tome as it features game reviews, interviews, and (just recently) gaming advice. They currently have a contest as well featuring prizes from various publishers.

Podcast Focus: I Should Be Writing

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://isbw.murlafferty.com/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/IShouldBeWriting
Description: Prolific podcaster Mur Lafferty shares with listeners her experiences as she tries to break into the industry (and she finally has with her upcoming novel, Playing for Keeps). You can get advice on writing, book agents, rejection letters, and even author interviews.

Podcast Focus: 2d6 Feet in a Random Direction

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.
URL: http://www.jadelantern.com/2d6feet/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/2d6Feet
Description: For me, the charm of this gaming podcast are its hosts, one of which is a store owner (and also podcasts over at the OgreCave Audio Report, another excellent podcast). The discussions are intelligent and they talk about not just the impact of games on individual gamers but on retailers and the industry as well. If you want a look at the gaming industry behind the store counter, this is the podcast to listen to.

Podcast Focus: The Bat Segundo Show

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.edrants.com/segundo/
RSS Feed: http://www.edrants.com/segundo/feed/
Description: A show that I should be plugging before it goes away, Edward Champion interviews a wide variety of authors and while I enjoy his focus on speculative fiction authors, he goes beyond the genre (and even the medium as he tackles film makers, comic artists, etc.). I find his interviews to be critical and smart and Champion is not afraid to throw difficult questions.

Podcast Focus: Wandering Geek Podcast

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://wanderinggeek.podbean.com/
RSS Feed: http://wanderinggeek.podbean.com/feed/
Description: This podcast is currently nominated for an ENnie but aside from that fact, this is one of the gaming podcasts that caught my attention. Suffice to say, the show is very unique as we get gaming perspectives from a truck driver and in line with that theme, the host tackles his subject matter with comments and reviews based on portability and travel. The show has a rotating show segment, including an interviews show, an all-music show (featuring music that geeks everywhere can appreciate), a review show and the general episode. You don't have to listen to each of those shows but they each offer something different.

Podcast Focus: Odyssey Podcasts

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.sff.net/odyssey/podcasts.html
RSS Feed: http://www.sff.net/odyssey/odysseypodcasts.xml
Description: As an aspiring writer, one of the options available to hone my craft are writing workshops. Unfortunately, I'm not available to attend the international writing workshops, especially the fantasy/science fiction-focused workshops. Enter Odyssey, a six-week workshop that features guest lecturers. You'll have to attend the workshop to get the entire experience but for those looking for tips on how to improve their craft or break into the industry, Odyssey has 15-minute podcast excerpts from various guest lecturers. What's 15 minutes of your time listening to some insightful advice?

Podcast Focus: Theory from the Closet

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://theoryfromthecloset.com/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/theoryfromthecloset
Description: "Roleplaying Game Theory and Design" is the tagline of the show and that pretty much sums up what this podcast is like. The host also conducts interviews with various people in the gaming industry, especially when it comes (but not limited) to the indie game industry. The audio quality is also superb and overall, if this was a music genre, I'd put it in the "alternative" category.

Podcast Focus: Astronomy Cast

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.astronomycast.com/
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/astronomycast
Description: It's not the Launch Pad Astronomy Workshop but it's probably the next best thing as this podcast talks about Astronomy in lay man's terms. Questions like what is the shape of the universe, what happens when you enter a black hole, or its recent shows, humans on Mars. I'm personally not into Astronomy but this podcast is compelling and expands my knowledge of science (who knows, it all might come in handy some day when you write that SF novel...).

Podcast Focus: Radio Free Hommlet

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://shiftways.com
RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/RadioFreeHommlet
Description: The new kid on the block, Radio Free Hommlet is a comprehensive D&D 4E podcast that can probably best be described as an "audio magazine" podcast. They have various segments, everything from focusing on the pros and cons of a specific character class, to answering your rules questions. If you're curious or have an interest in D&D 4E, you might want to try this podcast.

Podcast Focus: The Agony Column

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL:
http://www.trashotron.com/agony/ (website proper), http://www.trashotron.com/agony/indexes/audio_interview_index.htm (podcasts)
RSS Feed: http://trashotron.com/agony/indexes/tac_podcast.xml
Details: The Agony Column in itself is actually an impressive site as Rick Kleffel provides daily content, everything from book reviews, commentaries, and fiction/nonfiction pieces. However, as a podcast fan, the real gem for me is the daily podcasts that Kleffel produces. Even before podcasts became mainstream, The Agony Column has been providing audio content available for download. Kleffel covers all branches of literature, from fiction to non-fiction, and aside from interviews with authors, bookstores, publicists, and publishers, he also provides news reports, book readings, and event coverages. Speculative fiction fans also might want to tune in to The Agony Column because Kleffel has recordings of the regular SF in SF gatherings.

Podcast Focus: Pulp Gamer: The Paper Game Media Network

Every Friday, I'll talk about a podcast or two that catches my fancy.

URL: http://www.pulpgamer.com/
RSS Feed: http://www.pulpgamer.com/feeds/pg.xml
Details: If you have even the most remote interest in tabletop gaming (i.e. board games, card games, role-playing games, etc.) or interested in learning more, Pulp Gamer is the website to visit. This media network--upgraded from simply being a podcast--features a diverse selection of segments that caters to different markets, everything from retailers (GAMA Trade Show Seminars), casual gamers (Family Night), to hardcore fans (Gen Con Seminars, Inside Track). The site is a tome of resources that many people involved in the industry will find invaluable. You may not necessarily subscribe to every segment hosted by Pulp Gamer but there's probably a show that'll appeal to you. The hosts are courteous and consistent when it comes to providing family-friendly and informative content.
